60-90 Minutes Commute

Farmers Market / Grove Shopping District - The Original Farmers Market has fresh fruit, produce, seafood, ice cream, wines, cheeses, gourmet foods, as well as gift shops. The Grove is an outdoor shopping district featuring high-end stores and restaurants, a theater, live performances. This is a nice place to wander around and take in the sights, or go on a shopping spree.

Universal Studios CityWalk - (great choice!) an entertainment district located between the parking areas and the Universal Studios theme park, where guests can enjoy a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities and even take in a movie or two. You'll find a number of popular eating establishments here, such as The Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Buca de Beppo, Tony Roma's Ribs, and the Wolfgang Puck Cafe. You'll even find brand-name stores like Skechers, Quiksilver, Hot Topic, Guess, Fossil, Billabong, and Abercrombie and Fitch. Entertainment abounds here, from cinemas and nightclubs to fun street entertainers who always seem to draw a crowd.
Getting there:
From LAX, a bus ride takes 60-90 minutes each way (including transfers). Tram from Universal City Station to CityWalk takes an additional 10-15 minutes.
Take Flyaway Union Station, then Metro Rail Red Line train to the Universal City Station. There is a free tram that runs from the station to the top of the hill where you will find Universal Studios and Citywalk.

90-120 Minutes Commute

Westfield Century City - Upscale outdoor mall with department stores, top restaurants and a food court. This mall is really nice. Via Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is a short distance east of here.

Take Flyaway Union Station to Patsaouras Plaza (Union Station), then Metro Rapid Line 728 to the mall (on Constellation Blvd just past Avenue of the Stars).

Melrose Avenue - An eclectic shopping district near Hollywood. There is a concentration of shops and restaurants between Fairfax Avenue and La Brea Boulevard. Pink's famous hot dog stand is on La Brea Blvd very close to the intersection at Fairfax Avenue. The bus route listed below takes you through the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, which is the location of Museum Row on Miracle Mile. As you travel north on Fairfax Avenue, you will see Farmers Market and CBS Studios from the right side of the bus.

Robertson Boulevard Shopping District - This is where the stars shop. Features upper end boutiques and designer clothing stores such as Agnes B, Curve, Lisa Kline, and Kitson. There are shops along most of Robertson Blvd, however the shopping district is considered to be the area near Beverly Blvd. This is in the general area of Rodeo Drive, Beverly Center and Century City mall.

Beverly Center - A large mall with department stores, restaurants and a food court. This mall is really nice. It's located near the Restaurant Row area of Beverly Hills that features upscale restaurants.

Citadel Factory Outlets - The only factory outlet store malls that is located within the city of Los Angeles. The Citadel is a little south of downtown LA. Offers a huge collection of brand name stores, plus places to eat or grab a snack.

From LAX, a bus ride takes 90-120 minutes each way (including transfers).
Take Flyaway Union Station to downtown LA, then Metro Rail Red Line to 7th Street Metro Center, then walk to 6th Street and Flower Street. From there, take Metro Local Line 62 to the Citadel. Other routes exist, so see Metro.net for more.

120-180 Minutes Commute

Downtown Disney - if you want to feel the atmosphere of Disneyland without spending the whole day there, and have at least six hours on your layover, try Downtown Disney. It is a shopping district directly outside of the main gate of Disneyland. Admission is free.
Getting there:
From LAX, a bus ride takes 120-180 minutes each way (including transfers).
Take Lot G Shuttle to Metro Rail Green Line train to Norwalk Station, then Metro Express Line 460 to Disneyland. Downtown Disney is near the Main Gate.
